Can I Put Perfume in My Humidifier?

The thought of putting perfume into your humidifier might have quite frequently crossed your mind than not. After all, a device that spreads the vapor to freshen up the stale air around us could very well also benefit from spreading aroma around, right?

However, you need to know whether it is safe to add perfumes and colognes to the humidifier, and if so, in what form and amount.

You do not want to damage your humidifier by messing up the portions of the process. We are here to help you spill all the beans about what you need to do to make your humidifier smell good via the addition of aromatic substances.

Can You Put Perfume in A Humidifier?

No, you should not put perfume in your humidifier. It’s may look like a great way to make the air refreshed around the room but it really isn’t.

Adding perfume to your humidifier can cause harm to the machine and potentially be harmful to your health.

Humidifiers are designed to add moisture to the air and improve air quality, but they are not designed to handle perfumes. These substances can contain chemicals that can clog the humidifier and damage its internal components over time. Additionally, when these substances are heated or dispersed in the air, they can produce potentially harmful fumes or irritants that can negatively impact your health.

Can You Put Cologne in a Humidifier?

No, you can’t put cologne in a humidifier. It’s because this can be quite detrimental for your humidifier as well as for your respiratory system. Cologne, or eau de cologne,  is basically a perfume targeted toward men. And it’s quite expensive as well. Why would you want to put that into the humidifier?

Another issue that can arise with adding cologne to the humidifier is that it contains alcohol. It makes cologne flammable. You could, however, use a few drops of the cologne on top of the machine. You should do this using a cotton ball.

You can put a few drops of the perfume on the cotton and rub it in the warm region at the top of the humidifier. Cologne, otherwise, can destroy electrical devices, such as a humidifier, when added in larger quantities.

Can You Put Aftershave in a Humidifier?

No, you can’t put aftershave in a humidifier. Aftershaves are basically perfumed colognes with antiseptic quality. Which makes it toxic and not suitable for inhaling.

You can add scented substances, only in smaller, controlled portions, to the humidifier. The safest way to do this is using cotton balls, and that also not be done with aftershave. When it comes to using essential oils, this is still possible.

You can put a few drops of oil on the cotton balls. You can drop the cotton ball into the medicine well of the machine so that the steam can allow the aroma to vaporize and move into the air without causing the oil to come straight into contact with the inner areas of the machine.

Fire Concerns

You can risk causing a fire emergency or an explosion if you add alcohol-based perfume or aftershave to the humidifier. The warm mist humidifier has components that include heating elements that boil the water in the device and convert it to steam that is then dispersed throughout your space.

Hence, when you add Cologne as the liquid to the humidifier instead of water, you lead the flammable liquid towards the heating element. When you do so, the possibility of giving rise to a fire does not seem that impossible. Of course, the model and build of your humidifier will define whether such a fire occurs or not. But why should you take that risk anyway?

Health Consequences

We cannot stress the risks of inhaling alcohol through your humidifier in terms of health concerns.

You could also try to spray the Cologne into the water tank of the humidifier. It should again not be too much- just a few sprays should be enough. You can then enjoy the smell of your favorite perfume throughout your apartment.

It might work well in most cases, but again, avoid overdoing it. One piece of advice from our side will be to try with not too expensive Colognes to prevent wasting them. You should also keep an eye out for not ruining or staining the humidifier filter while you are adding the Cologne or other perfume to it. Never follow this step with aftershave.

Final Words

Now that you are aware of the effects of adding different kinds of perfumes and scented substances to your humidifier, you must have enough knowledge to prevent unwanted problems from arising by doing so.

A clear understanding of the operations of a humidifier can justify why adding fragrance or oil-based perfume is not a good idea. You should only use distilled water in your humidifier. Adding any other substance can damage the appliance and harm your health.

If you want to use your humidifier to add scent to a room, consider using the humidifier scents.

Another option is using a diffuser that is specifically designed for that purpose. These products are typically made with safe and natural ingredients that are better for your health and won’t cause damage to your humidifier or other devices.
